By their very nature abandoned mines and their associated spoil tips are extremely vulnerable to a wide range of operations.
For example, spoil tips are frequently exploited as a convenient source of stone for road and track construction, whilst mine shafts, adits and opencasts are often used for dumping a variety of agricultural and domestic refuse.
By actively working with landowners and tenants, CCW and the Central Wales Rigs Group (CWRG) aim to promote 'best practice' in conserving our SSSI and RIGS.
This can be achieved in a number of ways, for example by the provision of on-site scientific and technical advice, and the implementation of financed management agreements. It is hoped that volunteer assistance may become available through the CWRG.
